🥪🔥 THE “SOUTHERN STEAK” SANDWICH: CRISPY FRIED BOLOGNA 🔥🥪
In the South, we call this the “Working Man’s Steak.” If you grew up here, you know the sound of a thick slice of bologna hitting a hot cast-iron skillet is the sound of a good lunch on the way! 😋✨
This isn’t your average cold deli sandwich. We’re frying it until the edges are crispy and charred, then topping it with plenty of melty cheese and a classic Southern “zing.”
🛒 INGREDIENTS
The Star: 2-3 thick slices of Bologna (Ask the deli to cut them 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick—no thin slices here!)
The Bread: White Bread or a Brioche Bun (must be buttered and toasted!)
The Melty Goodness: 1-2 slices of Sharp Cheddar or American Cheese
The Tang: * Yellow Mustard (The traditional choice!)
Mayonnaise (Duke’s, of course)
The Crunch: Bread & Butter Pickles or a handful of Potato Chips (put them inside the sandwich for that extra crunch!)
👩🍳 INSTRUCTIONS
1️⃣ The “Pac-Man” Cut: This is the most important step! Make a single cut from the edge of the bologna slice to the center. This prevents the bologna from “doming” up in the pan and ensures it stays flat and gets evenly crispy. 🕹️
2️⃣ The Sear: Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. You don’t even need oil—the bologna has plenty of its own! Fry the slices for 2–3 minutes per side until the edges are dark and crispy.
3️⃣ The Melt: As soon as you flip the bologna, place your cheese slice on top so it gets perfectly gooey while the second side finishes. 🧀
4️⃣ The Toast: While the meat is sizzlin’, butter your bread and toast it in the same pan (or a separate one) until golden brown.
5️⃣ The Assembly: Slather one side of the bread with mayo and the other with plenty of yellow mustard. Pile on your crispy bologna and cheese, add your pickles, and top it off!
💡 PRO TIPS:
Upgrade the Cheese: Want to take it to the next level? Use a scoop of your Homemade Pimento Cheese instead of a regular slice! 🧀🔥
The Sweet Heat: A little bit of pepper jelly or a drizzle of hot honey is incredible on a fried bologna sandwich.
The Potato Chip Trick: If you want a real nostalgia trip, crush a few plain potato chips and put them right on top of the meat before closing the sandwich. The “crunch factor” is out of this world! 🍟
