Grandma’s Chocolate Pie

Ingredients

🥧 Pie Filling

  • 1 baked pie crust (9-inch)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3 cups whole milk 🥛
  • 3 egg yolks 🥚
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

☁️ Topping (Choose One)

Option 1: Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Option 2: Meringue

  • 3 egg whites
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the Chocolate Filling

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Gradually add milk, whisking until smooth.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick.

2. Temper the Eggs

  1. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks.
  2. Slowly add a bit of hot mixture into yolks (to warm them).
  3. Pour back into saucepan and cook 2–3 more minutes until thick and creamy.

3. Finish the Filling

  • Remove from heat.
  • Stir in butter and vanilla.
  • Pour into baked pie crust.

4. Add Topping

👉 Whipped Cream

  • Beat cream, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy.
  • Spread over cooled pie.

👉 OR Meringue

  1. Beat egg whites + cream of tartar until soft peaks.
  2. Gradually add sugar until stiff peaks form.
  3. Spread over hot pie and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10–15 minutes until golden.

5. Chill

  • Let pie cool, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours before slicing.

  • Stir constantly to avoid lumps
  • Use good-quality cocoa for deep flavor 🍫
  • Chill overnight for best texture
